Last night was wild.
Having just returned from my 5 week trip to Asia and Africa, I had my first public performance at the Lexus of Edmonton dealership at a book launch and partnership between Lexus and Moms, Dads, and Kids… After my first small set, I had the pleasure of listening to Zana Ohe take over the microphone as I got to mingle with the crowd and enjoy some free hors d’oeuvres until Wes pulled me aside having just read a tweet that said:
@MandolinBooks: Tonight – the modern pop/folk stylings of Asim Chin. See you at 7! #yeglivemusic #mandolinbooks
…I had half an hour to drive across town with only my guitar to get ready for a set that I had completely forgotten about. Turns out I had confirmed the booking while I was away but never took the time to write it down.
I made it over to the Mandolin Bookstore a minute before 7 o’clock wearing a suit and tie (from the gig at Lexus) and holding my guitar in one hand, and a few copies of ‘Boxed In’ in the other.

Thankfully the bookstore was small and didn’t require a PA system… and I was able to do my first stripped down, truly unplugged acoustic set for a small yet amazing group of people. I had an absolute blast being able to talk about what I have done over the past few years to get to where I am, and talk about what my plans are for the road ahead… as well as hear some of their thoughts about radio and the rest of the music industry. Hopefully the few that were there have found their way to my website in the liner notes of the EP… and if you’re reading this, here’s a big THANK YOU for making last night such a refreshing and amazing few hours. It was by far the most intimate gig I’ve had, and yet one of the most exciting.
…and of course, another big thank you to twitter, you giant web of computer code, for the timely public reminder.
And on that note, follow me @AsimChin
